Our first profile is of Kelli and Russ who own “Pun," one of our “Helped and Happy” dogs on the Available Dogs page.

-Do you have your pit bull for dog fighting, to guard your drug house, terrorize the neighborhood with your machismo or other?  If (other) please list reason:

We were looking for a new friend because we just had to put down our boxer.  We needed a dog to love and to love us back.  We knew that pit bulls usually have really laid back and friendly dispositions, and when we saw the photo of Pun online, we thought he was so beautiful that we had to meet him.  We had never rescued a pet before and we wanted to give a good home to a dog that hadn’t gotten to have a Forever Family yet.  Pun is such a good companion dog!  We think that everyone has benefited from the relationship, and it makes you realize how many sweet, loving animals are out there just waiting for someone to bring them home and love them!

-When did you drop out of school?

We both have college degrees and graduated with honors.

-So are you mostly a career criminal or do you hold down a day job?

Russ runs an automotive shop with the help of Pun, who goes to work with him every day, and is featured in the company coupons.  Pun has become a bit of a celebrity, as Northtown Auto Service won best auto repair shop in Kansas City by the Pitch newspaper, and Pun was even mentioned in the article about the shop!

Kelli sells insurance and manages an office for State Farm.  Unfortunately she does not get to bring any pets to her office

-What is your favorite activity with your dog?

Pun is hilarious to take on walks….he carefully examines everything that comes our way….sniffing and licking as he goes.  Not the best exercise, but highly entertaining.  He’s a pretty great (90 lb) lap dog.  His favorite activity with his humans is getting in bed with us during weekend sleep-ins.

-What have you learned from owning a pit bull?  Did anything surprise you?

We had both been around some pit bulls, but weren’t super familiar with the breed as a whole.  We previously had a boxer, who was less social than Pun.  The surprising thing to me has been that not many people are afraid of Pun, they say the “look on his face” is so friendly!  He loves every human from newborn to 90, and is really good at understanding that he needs to be gentle with certain people.  I expected to deal with a lot of negative reactions from the public at work or out on walks, but everyone just raves about his great disposition and beautiful physique!

-How did your family/friends react when you got him/her?

Most people were totally cool with it.  We had a parent and grandparent who were apprehensive to begin with, but they were quickly converted!  Pun just wants to make friends with everyone; it is hard to resist his charms when he comes up wagging his tail ready to introduce himself.  Our friends and their children all really love him!  People ask all the time how we got so lucky to have a pet with such a great personality! Everyone says we have the best dog ever.

-Is there anything else you want to share?

We both have just been so happy with the whole adoption process.  Game Dog Guardian has been very communicative from the start, and provided a lot of support for Pun's transition into our lives.  We know he was being well taken care of before we got him and he came to us in good health and in good spirits.  Again, this was the first time we have adopted a dog, but it will not be the last.  This has been so good for us, and so good for Pun.  Thanks to Anthony, Katie and everyone at Game Dog Guardian for all your help.
